In USA there is an increasing concern with a phenomena called metabolic syndrome (MetS). Increasing number of people are showing health condition with large waistline, high triglyceride level, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar level. Individuals with these conditions are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease, 5 times more likely to develop diabetes, 2 to 4 times more likely to have a stroke, and 3 to 4 times more likely to develop myocardial infarction. Metabolic syndrome is a major public health issue in the USA. Metabolic syndrome rose more than 35% from 1988–1994 to 2007–2012, increasing from 25.3% to 34.2% among US adults aged 18 years or older. International studies shows that metabolic syndrome is growing in Asia Pacific countries.
The longitudinal study for the period 1980 to 2013 however shows that overweight and obesity rates in the United States have almost stabilized, while these rates are increasing at a faster pace in Asian countries. It is evident that the long-term trend of societal health is worsening and it will put extra pressure in containing the healthcare costs. High prevalence of disease such as metabolic syndrome will continuously increase the burden on health care services. Appropriate measures are necessary to reverse the worsening trend and improve the societal health.
